Free Book Definition

What is the definition of a free book?

The following is a translation of FSF's Free Software Definition, replacing "the program" with "the book."

  • The freedom to use the book, for any purpose (freedom 0).
  • The freedom to study how the book works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this
  • The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
  • The freedom to improve the book, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

The following is a translation of the Definition of Free Cultural Works, replacing "the work" with "the book."

  • The freedom to use the book and enjoy the benefits of using it
  • The freedom to study the book and to apply knowledge acquired from it
  • The freedom to make and redistribute copies, in whole or in part, of the book
  • The freedom to make changes and improvements, and to distribute derivative book(s)

I would also add...

The freedom to MAKE/CREATE a book intended for copyrightless reproduction (without peer censure)--care to rewrite that?
